Aliens ahoy

(Alien employment permit: Suzhou, China)

I don’t think Ying is especially funny looking or otherworldly, but if you think this permit cover is amusing for Ying, mine reads “Foreign Expert Visa” which I think is even better. He received this once his work contract came through and I was very excited to have a picture so I could put it here. It probably isn’t that funny, but it looks so official that it really tickled me. If I get hold of mine again, I will attempt to photograph it and amuse myself, inflating my ego to ridiculous proportions with the label ‘expert’. The only thing I am becoming adept at since moving to China is honking at fellow cyclists and packing suitcases.

There are some very official procedures in China that I’m not sure occur in many other countries. Our shipping (which has yet to arrive after being dispatched in October) will be thoroughly empties and checked by customs staff, each time I arrive in the country, I must present myself at a police station within twenty-four hours to receive a residency permit. How one would do this as a lone tourist is really a mystery. I can’t even post a letter yet, I have seen the ‘China Post’ vans, yet never actually located a post office, if such a thing exists. Any ideas?

  1. Congrats!
well, I must say it looks pretty nice!

  2. Did you find the post office meanwhile? It´s in the neighborhoodcenter in Modern Avenue / Xing Hai Jie, hidden behind the optical shop. Don´t close your letter, they will check first. Good thing is, if you want to send a parcel, just go there and they will pack and wrap everything, don´t need to search for a box …
